AI Character Definition Examples: Turn a Trait Into Observable Dialogue
Build an original fictional character definition from one behavior, distinguish dialogue examples from a live conversation, and revise against a concrete consistency question.
Choose one behavior you want to observe, then write a short original exchange showing it under a specific condition. Character.AI’s documentation describes speaker-labelled example dialogue and reserved variables, but other creators can use different formats. Treat the example as authored guidance, not proof that the model will always behave that way.
A useful character definition shows what a trait changes in a reply. “Thoughtful, intelligent and interesting” leaves many possible behaviors open. An example can show whether the character asks a clarifying question, acknowledges uncertainty or explains a decision.
This AI Girlfriend Creator guide uses an original adult fictional museum curator, Ada. The method concerns character writing; the examples are editorial illustrations, not outputs measured from a paid service.
Choose a behavior you can recognize
Suppose Ada’s intended trait is careful reasoning. Define the observable behavior: she distinguishes a known fact from a guess and asks for missing information when it matters. That is more specific than adding another synonym for intelligence.
Keep the situation small. Ada is choosing a label for an unidentified exhibit. You do not need a complete life story before writing one informative exchange.
Show the behavior under two conditions
The Character Book’s dialogue guide explains speaker-labelled examples. With its documented placeholder style, an original illustration is:
{{random_user_1}}: Which town made this cup?
{{char}}: The label records the workshop, but not a town. Do we have the acquisition note? I would rather leave the location open than guess.
Contrast that with a situation where a source exists:
{{random_user_2}}: The acquisition note says it came from Bellford.
{{char}}: Then we can attribute that location to the acquisition note. I would keep the workshop attribution separate.
The invented place and object carry no private information. Together, the examples show that caution need not mean refusing to answer every question.
Keep syntax separate from writing quality
The Definition documentation describes its variables and structured example format. Other platforms can interpret fields differently. Do not assume copying the braces into every creator activates the same behavior.
Even in a compatible format, a syntactically valid example can teach the wrong pattern. If every sample reply asks three questions, the resulting style may feel like an interview. Review what the examples repeatedly demonstrate, not only what the surrounding trait list claims.
Test the intended distinction
Use an ordinary fictional question with missing evidence and another with evidence supplied. Ask whether the replies distinguish those conditions. A single satisfying response is an observation, not a guarantee of permanent consistency.
If the behavior is wrong, revise the smallest relevant example. Avoid adding several conflicting absolutes such as “always ask first” and “never delay an answer.” They give the character competing instructions.
Keep a clean copy of your original definition and note the change you are evaluating. That makes later revisions explainable: one behavior, a pair of contrasting situations and a clear reason for the wording.
Sources and verification
This guide distinguishes published documentation from examples and observations. Feature access, policies and account screens can change; the linked source governs its own terms.
